Winter Activities

I don’t know about you, but being outside in the fresh air is just about my favorite thing in the world (even though I can’t seem to make the necessary time for it as of late!)

I do notice a huge number of people tend to shy away from being outside during the cold and snowy winter months and this is a TRAVESTY!

If you put a bit of thought into what you wear you can be comfortable being outside in nearly any condition.  In this video I take a few minutes to explain the basics of how to layer for some different types of winter activities and give you some insight into what I have had success with after years of trial and error.

What I wore above got me through 3+ hours of snow-blowing 2 different driveways in below 0 windchill during a blizzard.  I have used the same basic set-up on many hikes in some seriously treacherous conditions as well.

I did add a balaclava to the set up for my night time snow removal, however, and this is a really effective piece that I forgot to mention above.

Stylish, eh?

No matter if you just go out for a quick walk with the dog or if you plan to hike to the summit of a 4000′ mountain, the winter weather is no excuse to not get out!

Concord actually maintains a pretty significant amount of trails.  I really like the Oak Hill area as it is centrally located, there are several different trail options and there is a fire tower with a nice view at the top!

Click here for a map of hiking trails in Concord and you can click here for specific details on the trail you want to learn more about.

So the bottom line is dress appropriately in layers and GET OUTSIDE no matter the weather!

If you’re reading this and there is a snow day, take this opportunity to get outside in the snow and move!  Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Go clear some snow.  Use a shovel, snowblower, heck, even a broom!  Bonus points if you get out there any help your neighbor out as the good karma will no doubt come back one day.
  • Go for a walk, hike, snowshoe or xc ski.  The world looks much different during and after a snow storm.  Smell the air, listen to the breeze and enjoy the crisp, refreshing winter weather.
  • Make a snowman.
  • Make a snow fort.
  • Have a snowball fight!
  • And to add a bit of extra pizzazz, bonus points if you do any of the above with a pack on to add a bit of extra load!

Feel free to leave a comment if you tried something out, of better yet if you have an idea to add to the list!
